Police today poured cold water on an urban myth that suggests officers are asking bars and clubs showing England games not to fly the flag.
The Facebook rumour, which started several weeks ago, says West Midlands Police are urging pubs and bars not to fly the St George flag.
It also states that licencees have been asked not to allow people wearing England shirts into their pubs to watch games on their screens.
But the senior officer organising the operational side of the force’s handling of the World Cup today dismissed the speculation as “nonsense”.
Inspector Howard Lewis-Jones said: “There has been no directive stating that pubs shouldn’t bear flags and certainly none suggesting that football fans shouldn’t wear their shirts.
“It is nonsense. Police officers are football fans too and patriotism should be an important part of enjoying the tournament in a fun and friendly atmosphere as long as people are sensible.”
He added: “If they’re not then they can expect us to be ready to deal with any incidents for the safety of all genuine football fans.”
